I honestly didn’t know what to expect on my visit to Amsterdam central. My entire life in the US the only thing people said about Amsterdam was how weed is legal there (lol). & it is – you can’t go one block without a nice whiff of some. But now after living here in The Netherlands, people have much different ideas and things to say about the city.
It’s about an hour drive or train ride from where I live in Eindhoven. Right when we walked out of the train station I could not believe how beautiful it was. The train station was a unique piece of work as you can see in the first pic. It was sooooo big – probably to fit the thousands of people every single day. That was the next thing I noticed as I was being bumped into left and right. There are people EVERYWHERE. Seriously everywhere. I have been in big cities before, but never seen this many people in one area. It was both overwhelming and astounding at the same time.
We didn’t really have a plan for the day – just to walk around and explore & oh boy did we! In the next few pictures you can see how intricate the details were. A random hallway had the ceiling tile you can see in the next two pics. They spent that much time on a RANDOM CEILING!!! Wtf. The US needs to step up their gameeeeee is all I’m gonna say.
I bet you can guess what my first priority was upon arriving..food of course. We’re soccer girls cut us a break 🙂 I sadly did not save any pictures but we found this super cute cafe along side a canal. Lucky for me travel day also coincided with cheat day, so obviously I had no choice but to get loaded nachos for lunch. I couldn’t even finish these nachos and I never leave food on my plate. I was STUFFED. Seriously, I thought I was gonna vom. So we left and planned to continue exploring. We got about 3 doors down and ran into a place called “Ice Bakery”. Just as the deep breaths began I looked in the window and suddenly realized I had a lil more space to fill. Mama ain’t raise no b****!!
They had ginormous muffins with all types of candies and sauces. They had waffles, pretzels, even the lil ‘American Pancake’ you can see above. I decided to go with the oreo cookie. One thing you will definitely catch on to is I am a huge cookies and cream advocate. I’ve had cookies and cream ice cream and cake, but never had I heard of a cookie!! I am not joking when I tell you this was the best cookie I have ever had in my entire life. My ENTIRE LIFE. Then the guy had the audacity to ask me if I wanted any toppings? Are you kidding me?! Yes I will take it with white chocolate drizzle and a scoop of cookies and cream ice cream sir, who do I look like?
After some deep breathing exercises and few pep talks I was able to continue our journey. Of course I had researched if there was an Urban Outfitters…there was. Urban is my #1 place to shop, and I haven’t been to one since moving here, so you could say I was pretty stoked. We show up to this place and it is 3 stories I kid you not. I actually shed a tear. After spending an hour or more in Urban alone I think we were shopped out. We made our way over to the “I Amsterdam” sign that everyone knows and loves. You can barely see me in the far away pic, but you can see me up close on the dam 😉
There were so many things that we weren’t able to do in the short amount of time we were there. I would absolutely love to go back. They have a Heineken Brewery there and my teammate claims it is soooo awesome and they get you soooo drunk. A win-win then, right? The Anne Frank house and The Red Light District are two other big ones that are tourist “must sees”. I honestly cannot even explain the Red Light District to you. It is something you seriously have to see in person for yourself in order to believe it. Unreal.
If you are a nature/scenery person then you must see the canals. You really can’t miss them as they are literally on almost every block. So beautiful, and you can even get on a “hop on hop off” boat instead of walking around. I loved my short experience there and highly recommend to anyone who is thinking of going. Just make sure you stop at the Ice Bakery!! Oh and let me know if you need a travel partner 🙂
